Develop with us
We know people make PCH and only by having committed and motivated employees can we continue to provide great services to our customers, that’s why it’s important we continue to develop the people that make PCH so great.
Inductions
You’ll be invited to a welcome meeting to help you settle into your team. This will ensure you are comfortable and happy to take on the job and know how to stay safe in the workplace.
You will be invited to attend a brief informal induction after joining us, giving you a better idea of PCH, our Values and Behavioural expectations.
Probation
New starters will complete a six-month probation. The probationary period allows you and the organisation to assess each other’s suitability. We’ll meet every two months to see how things are going.
We want you to like it here with PCH and we will provide you with objective feedback about how well you are doing and what, if anything, you may need to achieve to be successful. We will consider any additional training that can support you.
Your line manager
You will have regular contact with your line manager and how often these happen may be different depending on your role. We genuinely care about how you’re getting on at PCH and these meetings are an opportunity to look at your progress, talk about any issues that you may be facing or any health or domestic issues. You can talk to your line manager or speak to HR in confidence if anything is bothering you.
You can also discuss the effectiveness of any support or adjustments made as a result of a disability. Your line manager will provide you with notes from your meeting.
An outline structure of a 1 to 1 meeting is available for your reference on the intranet.
1 to 1 Meetings
You will have regular 1 to 1 meetings with your line manager. The frequency of these meetings may vary, but as a rule, these will be every 4 to 6 weeks. We genuinely care about how you’re getting on at PCH and these meetings are an opportunity to review progress and raise any issues that you may be facing or any health or domestic issues. You can also discuss the effectiveness of any support or adjustments made as a result of a disability. Your line manager will provide you with a set of notes from your meeting.
Some employees may not have 1 to 1 meetings and will have collective toolbox talks. This doesn’t mean you can’t request a 1 to 1 meeting at any time with your manager.
An outline structure of a 1 to 1 meeting is available for your reference on the intranet.
Talent Management and Staff Development
Our Talent Management and Staff Development Programme ensures that you have the skills and knowledge to do your job well and safely. We want to learn from you to find out how we can deliver excellent services for our residents so always feel free to let us know what you think.
We work with training providers as a partnership to make sure that we provide you with the skills you need to carry out your role.
For more information, contact the Learning and Development Team.
Corporate Training Program
To support the values we have as an organisation, we have our training program. We think this training is essential for everyone working in social housing, whatever their role.
The program is run by HR and you will get details of any courses we would like you to attend.
If you are invited to take part in a particular course, but unable to attend due to sickness absence or pre–booked leave you will be required to let your line manager know as soon as possible.
Appraisals
Appraisals take place every year. This is a chance for you and your manager to look at your progress against your agreed objectives for the year.
You will have the chance to talk about any learning and development needs you might need to support you in your role.
We have also developed a framework which tells us what a good job for our customers and each other looks like. Your manager will help you to understand any support you might need to reach our standards.
Vacancies and Secondments
All job vacancies are shown on Jannet.
We do advertise externally when needed, but we want internal applicants to apply.
From time to time we are able to offer secondments to jobs within the organisation which offer experience and development opportunities to our staff.
We encourage secondments but it will depend on the need of your team before you can be seconded. You should speak to your manager before you apply for any secondment.
For more details and information on applying for a secondment please refer to the Secondment Procedure.
Behavioural Framework
We all have a role to play in contributing to the success of Plymouth Community Homes. As well as our core values of Care, Listen, Respect and Do the Right Thing, PCH also has a Behavioural Framework to provide a clear plan (and a shared vision) to highlight the expected behaviours that we need to show to help us to fulfil our roles to the best of our ability.
The behavioural framework also helps with recruitment and creates a framework for expectations at all levels.
